China Launches Light-Speed Rail Link Between Hong Kong and Mainland China

According to AFP, a new high-speed rail link between Hong Kong and mainland China was launched Sunday; a multi-billion-dollar project that critics say gives away part of the city's territory to an increasingly assertive Beijing. Costing over $10 billion and taking more than eight years to build, the system aims to transport more than 80,000 passengers daily between the Asian financial center of 7 million people and the neighboring manufacturing hub of Guangdong province (Newyork Post). Critics say the railway is a symbol of continuing Chinese assimilation of Hong Kong, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with guarantees of widespread autonomy and freedoms not enjoyed on the mainland, including an independent legal system (Arab News).

Is the Syrian Conflict the Beginning of the End?

It is granted that many analysts have hinted the unlikelihood of the break out of world war III from the Syrian conflict having monitored the dispositions of the super powers to an all-out war. Indeed, the super powers especially the US and allies are cautious with their reactions to Russia's provocations. Russia herself has taken to denials to the army of accusations from the West - a smart way of making the West believe that Russia is not out to challenge. The obvious caution against war by the super powers notwithstanding, the Syrian conflict is capable of taking the world by surprise leading to the much prophesied Armageddon. This position is hinged on a number of premises: (1) The conflict has many actors - prominent among them are the Assad's troops, Russia, ISIS, USA, Rebels, Turkey, Kurds, Hezbollah, Australia, etc. Each time I look at the array of actors in the conflict and there interests, it reminds me of the Hobbesian State of Nature where everybody...

Too Good At Goodbyes, a New Song by Sam Smith is Trending in Philippines

Sam Smith releases comeback single Too Good At Goodbyes after two-year absence. It is the first single off his forthcoming sophomore album. There’s a sort of humblebrag embedded in the title that Smith more than prepared to make good on with this, his first outing since that two-year-old James Bond theme. He really is almost too adroit at pulling off a ridiculously delicate ballad in a world of bangers. Read Also: North Korean Missile Launch The brag part comes in as Smith paints himself as the world’s greatest relationship saboteur. He’s hard-ass and softie all at once. And you may as well learn the lyrics now, because it’s all you’ll hear on the radio for weeks. The 25-year-old’s last single, The Writing’s On The Wall, was released in 2015, and we suppose you could say it was successful – the Spectre theme won Best Original Song at the 2016 Oscars. People Attack the Use of French Flags on Facebook Profiles After the Paris Attack

Tailing the coordinated terrorist attacks in strategic places in Paris, France Friday night, the Facebook allowed users to overlay their profile pictures with transparent French flag in condolences to the victims of the dastardly act. This should have been seen as a noble act but it was not. What then went wrong? The supposedly well-meaning act was condemned by people from North and South as very partial given that their were other more horrendous acts of terrorism all over the world than that of the Paris. Nothing of that sort was put in place by the popular social media site, Facebook. One could make a litany of them but of particular importance were the Kenyan Attack that left 147 persons dead (Paris death toll is less than 130) and the thousands that died to daily attacks by Boko Haram in Nigeria's North-East region. Peaople querried: Were those ill-fated Kenyans and Nigerians less human? How many black's bloods make up one white's blood (according t...

MH370: Is a Kettle Also Among the Debris?

Following the finding of a possible Boeing 777 wing that washed up on a tiny Island in Indian Ocean, local beach-combers have swarmed the island for more debris that could be found. Then there came a mangled metal that only could possibly be a kettle which was also picked up. The media swooped on it with all enthusiasm that it was another debris from MH370. The one million dollar question remains: Why a kettle on a plane? There were just two Chinese words on the kettle: Xinji and the Chinese word for kettle. The two words when searched on a google image, brought out similar picture to the mangled kettle. In Saint-Andre, the town where the wing flap was found, a National Police officer speaking on condition of anonymity feared his police station would be "submerged by a mountain of junk". "People will bring in any old shoe they find on the beach," he sighed, duty bound to log all items handed in. Two of the local beach-combers were asked and they responded ...

This climatic condition has even prompted the Iraqi authorities to declare a 4-day work free days to cool off. Iraq lacks beaches unlike other Middle East countries; and travel restrictions make it very difficult for people to seek respite elsewhere. People have been advised to stay out of the sun and also drink plenty of water.
