Protests Have Been Carried Out by the Students in the University of Ibadan Today Due to Many Issues

The students of the University of Ibadan have taken to the streets today, Monday 13th May, 2024 to protest hike in fees and harsh economic condition in Nigeria. According to Victor Igbudu, the NANS Public Relations Officer quoted in the Punch,  the 2023/2024 academic session fee increase ranging from #230,000 -  #412,000 is unacceptable to the students. Based on this, the students during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Student Union Government (SUG) of the school voiced out their grievances in protests with placards.  The students insisted that the fee increment is outrageous at the face of the severe economic challenges that parents and guardians face in the country.

What appears to be in reaction to the protests, a team of soldiers from Operation Burst arrested some four students, and took them to the barracks. This has elicited condemnations from a human rights group called Take It Back Movement which posted on X  condemning the arrest as despicable. They requested their immediate release.

In one of the accounts by an eye witness, the harassment started with the UI security officers before the soldiers came in. The Dean, Students  Affairs and the Army spokesperson have not been reached for comments as efforts to reaching them by Punch failed at the press time.
