The expectation was high in America before the match between
Anderson and Querrey that the American, Sam Querrey would hit the semis at US
Open. It was not to be as Kevin Anderson defeated Sam Querrey to become the
first South African to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for 14 years. The
31-year-old came out on top of a predictably tight encounter that finished just
before 2am at Flushing Meadows, with Anderson winning 7-6 (7), 6-7 (11), 6-3,
7-6 (9). Anderson won, and the United States still hasn’t had had a male Grand
Slam semifinalist since 2009, and the U.S. Open has one motley semifinal.
Roddick is the last American male to reach the Open semis,
which he did in 2006, and the last to win a grand-slam tournament, the 2003
U.S. Open. Querrey said the history and potential for him to be the American to
break back through didn’t weigh on him.
“No, I never thought about,” he said. “I was just going out
there doing the best I could.”
