Oba of Lagos is Dragged to the ICC for his Threat to Drown the Igbos in the Lagoon

Oba of Lagos is Dragged to the ICC for his Threat to Drown the Igbos in the Lagoon

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has initiated an inquest into the alleged threat by Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos to drown the Igbo race living in Lagos in Lagos Lagoon if they fail to vote for All Progressive Congress (APC).

In a letter dated April 21 2015, Dr. Josef Umunnakwe Onoh, the son of the former governor of Anambra state, C.C. Onoh vowed to drag the monarch to the world criminal court for the alleged statement which was largely considered as inciting genocide.

Dr. Onoh made his threat real in the letter and the ICC has acknowledged the receipt saying “This communication has been duly entered in the communications register of the office."

In a second correspondence referenced under OTP-CR-140/15, ICC’s Head of Information and Evidence Unit in the office of the prosecutor, M. P. Dillion, said they were analyzing the situation identified in the petition, with the assistance of other related communications and other available information.

During the heat of the 2015 guber election  in Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos who threw his weight behind the APC flag bearer in Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode, addressed the Igbo contingent in his palace that if the Igbos voted outside the wish of the throne that they would be thrown into Lagos Lagoon. A statement which APC swiftly dissociated herself from as it began to cause public disapproval.
