Security Officials Screen Journalists and Others Accessing Lagos Assembly Complex Ahead of Plenary

On January 27, 2025, heightened security measures were observed at the Lagos State House of Assembly as officials screened journalists and other individuals attempting to access the complex ahead of a scheduled plenary session. Policemen from the Nigerian Police Force, Lagos Command and other security personnel were stationed at the assembly's main gate, with additional vehicles placed strategically within the premises. The move appeared to be part of efforts to maintain order amidst ongoing tensions following the ousting of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

At the assembly’s second gate, journalists queued to gain entry, presenting their identity cards for verification. Those unable to produce valid identification were denied access. These strict protocols underscore the lawmakers' intent to ensure only authorized personnel could enter, especially in light of the leadership dispute between Obasa and his deputy-turned-successor, Mojisola Meranda.

The plenary session comes after a series of dramatic events over the weekend, including Obasa’s public declaration that he remains the legitimate Speaker until due process is followed for his removal. On January 13, 2025, a majority of the assembly members voted to remove him, citing allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement. However, Obasa has consistently denied these claims and challenged his accusers to provide evidence. Speaking at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja GRA on Saturday, he told supporters that the allegations lacked substance, urging transparency from his detractors.

The decision to impeach Obasa and install Meranda as Speaker has sparked a leadership tussle within the assembly, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and tension. The situation reached a peak during a recent gathering of lawmakers for a photo session, where Obasa’s absence was conspicuous. This symbolic moment highlighted the assembly's division and the unresolved conflict regarding its leadership.

In response to the ongoing dispute, the Lagos State House of Assembly has taken visible steps to reinforce security, ensuring that today’s plenary session proceeds without incident. Security personnel have assured the public and assembly members of a peaceful and orderly session, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining stability within the legislative complex.

This leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly underscores the challenges associated with political transitions and the intricate dynamics of legislative governance. The allegations of financial impropriety against Obasa have raised questions about accountability and transparency in public office, while his insistence on due process highlights the importance of legal and procedural adherence in resolving disputes.

The tension surrounding the assembly is emblematic of broader issues within Nigeria’s political landscape, where power struggles often result in significant security concerns. The presence of a substantial security detail at the assembly serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between maintaining order and respecting democratic processes. While today’s plenary session may mark a step toward resolving the crisis, the underlying issues of trust, governance, and accountability will likely remain topics of public discourse.

As the Lagos State House of Assembly navigates this challenging period, its actions will be closely watched by citizens and stakeholders alike, serving as a litmus test for the resilience and integrity of legislative institutions in Nigeria.

An international organization is a union of actors in the international arena, formed to perform specified functions and/or solve identified problems for the members and/or non members. The concept of an international organization can also be seen on the one hand as a logical progression in the evolution of political entities from the basic family or tribal grouping of pre- and early historic times to the feudal arrangements of early Europe which emerged following Peace of Westaphalia in 1648 (Imber 1984). A second perspective on international organization is that as being something antithetical to the state in effect an external entity which may subsume or destroy the state.
