NYSC Denies Banning Pregnant women and Nursing Mothers from Camp

The NYSC Director General, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi has denied the insinuation that pregnant women and nursing mothers had been banned from participation in NYSC Orientation camp. According to him, they were not banned but advised to get fit first before comming for the programme.

“We did not ban pregnant women and nursing mothers from orientation camps. In the past, we have had cases where pregnant women and nursing mothers came to camps to participant in the NYSC activities. These are people who should come for service but rather we see ourselves managing them. So, what we are saying is that ‘if you are pregnant, why don’t you go and deliver, then when you are okay, you can come for the national service. It is in their interest and also to give effectiveness to what we are doing in the scheme.”

It follows therefore to mean that pregnant women and nursing mothers could still go to NYSC Orientation camp if they so desired. The Orientation camp is a 21-day programme of events designed by NYSC to equip new corp members with the needed knowledge and skills to serve their fatherland in their places of primary assignment.
