Amidst of fears and predictions
of violence after the 2015 polls, the US Secretary of State, John Kerry says
that US would deny visa to anybody that would forment trouble in the
forth-coming election in Nigeria; an election which he described as going to be
the largest in the continent.
He made the statement after
meeting with the presidential candidates of PDP and APC, President Goodluck
Jonathan and Muhammad Buhari respectively.
“Given the stakes, it’s absolutely
critical that these elections be conducted peacefully that they are credible,
transparent and accountable,” Kerry told reporters on a visit to Lagos.
Kerry
urged the leading presidential
candidates to refrain from fomenting violence after next month’s vote. “It is
absolute critical that this election can be conducted peacefully. The
international community is paying very close attention to this election,” he
said.
“This
will be the largest democratic election on the continent,” he said.
He
condemned Boko Haram and said US had been engaged with Nigeria in the fight of
terror and promised that US would do more is the election went peacefully.
“Bottom
line, we want to do more and that was part of the message to both President
Jonathan and General Buhari today,” Kerry declared.
“We
are prepared to do more but our ability to do more will depend to some degree
on the full measure of credibility and accountability and transparency and
peacefulness of these elections.”
