The Earthquake that Hit Dallas, USA is Trending

Dallas is hit with several waves of earthquake measuring about 3.5 magnitude on afternoon of January 6.

The quake centered close to old Texas Stadium in Irving, according to NBC Dallas/Fort Worth. Residents of the area had blamed previous earthquakes, in part, on the implosion of the old Texas Stadium in April 2010.

The Irving area has been feeling earthquakes for months, member station KERA reports:

"It's the strongest quake to hit Irving in recent months. Several quakes have hit Irving around State Highways 114 and 183 – near the stadium site and the city's only producing gas well. Reportedly, 18 earthquakes have been felt in the area since early September."

Researchers from Southern Methodist University (SMU) were expected to begin installing a seismograph in Irving earlier this week to help study what's behind the increase.

SMU researchers are taking a hard look at disposed waste water as a possible cause.

“There’s been some indication that disposable fluids can trigger small earthquakes,” said Dr. Brian Stump, a professor of earth sciences at SMU. “That's still an open question in this particular case.”

We have no reports of any injuries or major damage at this time. Larry Mowry with CBS Dallas/Fort Worth tweeted that the earthquake was 3.2 miles deep.
